We have the parts:

Subject: The man

Auxillary Verb: is

Verb in the -ing: eating

The present continuous

Let's see:

What is the subject?
The man
'The man' is a plural subject so it should go with 'are'.
'The man' is a singular subject so it should go with 'is'

Present continuous Subjects: Think about it...

Is the man ONE man or many?

He is just one man, therefore it is singular subject and we should use the auxiliary verb, 'is'.

So What did we learn?

The present continuous tense, also called the present progressive tense, is used to talk about actions that are happening right now. We form it by using am, is, or are with a verb ending in -ing. For example, "I am reading," "She is running," and "They are playing." This tense helps us describe things happening at this very moment!

Forming the Present Continuous...

SUBJECT (eg. I, you, the boy, the children) + AUXILLARY VERB (eg. am, are, is) VERB IN THE -ING FORM (eg. singing, dancing, playing...)
