ONCE UPON A TIME...

To start writing your story you need a catchy begining like this one... Ex: Once upon a time, there was a small girl living in the middle of the forest...

Describing the main character

Think about the type of protagonist that you want for your story. Is it a hero or heroine? Do you prefer to describe a normal person? Then, make a short description about its physical aspect and the features of its personality.

Now it's time to describe the place

There are so many options to choose from, if you want to create a fantasy story you should probably think about other worlds, planets, imaginative environments with aliens and weird creatures. Think about the setting of The Lord of the Rings, Dune, Harry Potter and so on.

However, if you prefer to set your story in a more realistic environment, you should use the reality that surround you to describe the setting. For instance, use vocabulary about the towns and cities such as supermarkets, schools, shopping centres, parks, avenues, theme parks, etc.

TIMELINE

Step 1

Introduce the characters and the setting.

Add a problematic situation to the story to make it exciting.

Step 3

Help the protagonist to solve the problem.

ADVENTURE STORIESIf the protagonist is exploring a new place, imagine different threats like dangerous animals, dark places, mysterious people that can cause problems...

DETECTIVE STORIESImagine that there is a murder, a theft, someone robs an important object from a specific place and so on. The protagonist tries to solve the mystery.

Examples of 'problems'

ROMANTIC DRAMAThe protagonist falls in love but for some reason the lovers can't be together. Think about Romeo and Juliet, films like The Notebook and so on.

• So + adj / Such a + adj + noun
• Too / Enough
• Comparative sentences
• Superlative sentences

adverbial phrases

• To describe actions: fast, happily, sadly, rapidly, slowly, etc.
• Fixed expressions: without a shadow of a doubt, suddenly, out of the blue..., in the middle of..., it all started when..., it dratically changed when...,etc.
• In the end, in a nutshell, ...

All stories include more people apart from the protagonist...but, how many types of characters are there?

BEST FRIEND

Usually, the protagonist has a best friend that accompanies them through the story

VILLAIN

Typically a bad person/figure that tries to hurt the protagonist in some way.

ENDING

After solving the problem, it is interesting to wrap up the story with a morale. For example: ...and this is how you get the princess. After all these adventures, Sally learned that friendship could actually save her life. Without thinking twice, Dracula disappeared into the dark of the night to be hidden forever and ever.
