INTRODUCTION

Spain has a rich mining tradition, especially in Castilla y León, Ávila and Valladolid. Since ancient times, mining has played a crucial role in the economy of these regions.

SPANISH MINING AND ECOSYSTEMS

Many Spanish ecosystems have suffered the negative impact of mining. The mountainous region of León or the natural environments of Huelva are an example of this. Their ecosystems have been fragmented and this has led to many of the local species being in danger of extinction.
