Il termine carestia fa riferimento a una scarsità di generi alimentari necessari per viveri, dovuta a cause naturali (siccità, grandine, locuste), guerre o crisi economiche.
Può essere dichiarata solo quando vengono raggiunti i seguenti criteri:
Il 20% della popolazione ha meno di 2.100 kcal di cibo al giorno.
La malnutrizione acuta colpisce oltre il 30% bambini.
Ci sono due morti ogni 10.000 persone, o quattro morti per 10.000 bambini, ogni giorno.
NIGERIA
In alcune zone del nord est della Nigeria, un intenso conflitto con il gruppo armato di Boko Haram ha tagliato fuori dagli aiuti umanitari migliaia di persone per quasi due anni. Quasi 250.000 bambini nello stato del Borno soffrono di malnutrizione acuta e, secondo report recenti, le vite di 59.500 bambini nello stato del Borno sono in pericolo per i livelli “catastrofici” di insicurezza alimentare.
