What was the 1st Thanksgiving?

In 1620, some 100 people called the Pilgrims decided to leave England. They were Puritans who wanted to find a place where they could practice their religion the way they wanted without being persecuted. They sailed across the Atlantic on a ship, the Mayflower, during 66 days. They landed at Plymouth Rock in December and formed the first permanent settlement of Europeans in New England. They built small houses, but it was too late to grow vegetables. The winter was very cold and half of the Pilgrim Fathers died because they didn’t have a lot of food and they didn’t have warm clothes.

Long before they came to North America, many Native American tribes lived there. The Plymouth colony had been the home of the Wampanoag people for over 12,000 years. The natives knew the land well. In the spring of 1621, Squanto, a Wampanoag who spoke English, visited them. Squanto helped the settlers grow corn and taught them how to hunt. Natives and settlers became friends. In the fall of 1621, to celebrate the excellent harvest, the Pilgrims invited the Native Americans to a feast. This meal is now considered the first Thanksgiving in America. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln said there would be a national day for Thanksgiving. Since then Thanksgiving is officially celebrated in the USA on the fourth Thursday of November.

Thanksgiving today In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Although its origins are religious, today, Thanksgiving is a largely secular holiday. In the United States, a tradition of gifting turkeys to the President has more recently evolved into a humorous turkey ‘pardoning’. At this light-hearted ceremony, the President issues an official pardon for one or two turkeys, saving them from being cooked for supper.
