Are there Roma in Spain?Of the estimated 725,000-750,00 Roma (also known as Gypsies, a name many consider derogatory) in Spain, nearly half of the population lives in Andalusia, with the rest residing primarily in Catalonia, Valencia, and Madrid.
WHERE DO THE ROMA PEOPLE ORIGINATE FROM?
Historically, the presence of gypsies in Spain dates back to the 15th century. Arriving on the peninsula through the Pyrenees, the first document that attests to their presence dates back to 1425, when King Alfonso V, the Magnanimous, granted a certificate of passage to Juan and Tomás, who called themselves counts of Egypt Minor. Precisely from the name "Lesser Egypt" the word "gypsy" would arise, which is how the Roma are known in Spanish. From then on the gypsies would disperse throughout the rest of the country.
HOW IS THE ROMANI fLAG?
It is divided into two horizontal stripes, blue and green, with a red wheel in the center. The upper part, blue, symbolizes the sky, which is the roof of the home of the Romani people, due to their history as a nomadic people. The lower one, green, symbolizes the ground or field, the world through which they travel. The wheel, also present on the flag of India, expresses the desire for freedom of movement beyond established borders.
