START
The American flag is red, white and blue. It's got 13 red and white horizontal stripes, and 50 white stars on a blue background. The 50 stars represent the American states. The 13 stripes represent the colonies which became the first 13 states in the 18th century. The national emblem of the USA is the bald eagle.

GEOGRAPHY
North America: Includes countries like the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It's characterized by mountain ranges such as the Rockies and the Appalachians, and vast central plains crossed by rivers like the Mississippi. South America: Dominated by the Andes mountain range along the western coast and vast river basins like the Amazon.
The capital of the United States is Washington. It's the only American city that isn't part of a state. It's a separate district. In fact, stands for 'District of Columbia. Don't confuse Washington with Washington State (in the north-west of the country)!
THE CAPITAL
The United States is a constitutional republic, with an elected president. There are two main political parties:Republicans and Democrats. The president lives in the White House, in Washington . There are elections for the US president every four years. After this, the president can stand for election again, but nobody can be president more than twice!The US parliament, or'Congress, meets and makes national laws in a building called the United States Capitol in Washington . The US Congress has two parts: the Senate, and the House of Representatives
