LOCAL FOOD EVENT IN ATHENS, GREECE

Welcome to our December journey! Each day, students will open a new window to share cherished traditions, heartfelt wishes, and meaningful resolutions. This calendar will also focus on key Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Let’s make this a season of learning, connection, and positive action!

Playing other games with friends or riding our bikes is also something fun to do!

Playing Secret Santa is a fun activity we can do on the holidays.

OUR HOPES FOR EQUALITY IN THE UPCOMING YEARNowadays, equality doesn’t exist in many countries, worldwide. The most known problem concerning equality is that many people believe that there is a big difference among males and females. For example, in some countries women’s hair or face aren’t allowed to be shown, women are not allowed to drive, to work and generally there are not entitled to the same rights with men. Cooking a seasonal meal is not only following instructions. It's infusing each dish with your own creativity and love. Every recipe you try it is a step toward mastering new flavours and every traditional meal you share is a chance to connect with others.

An Unforgettable Experience

I am going to share a story about an experience I had last year . It was December the 24th [Christmas Eve] in 2023 when me and my family were going on a roadtrip to Parnitha (Parnitha is a mountain range north of Athens). While we were driving we saw a fallen birds’ nest, so we stopped immediately to see what was going on. When we picked up the birds’ nest we were surprised to see a baby pigeon that was all alone. The weather was frosty there and the baby pigeon could freeze to death, so we decided to take it with us. On our way home we were very careful and we decided that the best solution would be to carry it in a animal shelter so it could grow up with other baby pigeons. The place we carried the pigeon was called “Anima”. “Anima” is a place where wildlife animals are protected , nursed and rehabilitated . After two months we got a phone call from the “Anima”. We were informed that the pigeon had grown up and it had been very happy. All my family was happy and moved by listening to these good news !! They also told us that they were going to carry our more research on fallen birds’ nests so as to protect the wildlife and the little birds. It was an UNFORGETTABLE day !!!! On Christmas Eve our families play board games, cards, riddles, jenga, joker and stop. Near midnight we open our Christmas gifts.On the days before Christmas Eve we go to the city (Barcelos) and look at the Christmas lights.

Bacalhau da Consoada

Roupa Velha

Cod is one of the Portuguese traditional dishes for Christmas. We cook cod in many ways, but for Christmas we have "Bacalhau da Consoada" - Christmas Eve Cod. This is a simple recipe of cod, potatoes, cabbage, and boiled egg, flavoured with lots of olive oil.With the leftovers, on the next day we cook "Roupa Velha" (Old Rags) - it consists of mixing the leftover cod, potatoes, cabbage, and eggs, as well as olive oil and garlic.

Helping those in need during the holidays

• Donate to Charitable Organizations: food, blankets, toys, gift cards
• Volunteer Your Time: serve meals, organize/join community events, offer companionship (e.g., spend time with elderly in senior centers)
• Provide Holiday Essentials: warm clothing, hygiene products
• Organize a Fundraiser or Online Drive: collect donations ,sponsoring holiday meals
• Random Acts of Kindness: paying for someone's coffee or meal , helping someone with holiday shopping if he is struggling financially or physically
• Spread Awareness: spreading about the need for assistance,sharing information about local charities
• Support Mental Health: emotional support
• Help Animals in Need : donate food, supplies, or even adopt an animal
