Historical Background

A TIME TRIP TO THE GREAT WRITERS

Middle English

This period of history is often referred to as the "Dark Ages" because there were few major discoveries or innovations. The spread of knowledge was limited, and many important pieces of knowledge were lost or destroyed. After the fall of the Roman Empire the Catholic Church rose to power as a symbol of unity and order. They limited the access to culture and knowledge. The Crusades were used by the Catholic Church to reclaim the Holy Land, spread Christianity, and protect Catholic kingdoms.
