We took a trip to the MIT Museum together and explored the history of Artifical Intelligence and future technological advacements

Optiker Exhibit

1st Article

2nd Article

- The Optiker Exhibit contained many of the works of Stephen Benton. - Stephen Benton was a professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT - Notable things in the exhibit were different types of holograms including white-light "rainbow" holograms which Benton invented.

This photo taken at MIT Museum was of the hologram Head of Aphrodite. This was a display made in 1978 by Stephen Benton.

This hologram is another work of Professor Stephen Benton and this one contains an image of the head of medusa.

"Pregnant Futures: The Surrogacy, 2021

Whats going on here?

This depicts a future pig pregnant with human and pig fetuses

Prompts Ethical Concerns

"Is technology altering human reproduction too far? Would this allow true equality in the world?"

Meaning of the Art

The Surrogacy is a provocation, asking viewers to consider the relationship between the options technology offers and how they alter our cultural and emotional values.

Michael's Reflection

Ethan's Reflection

I really enjoyed the Pig Surrogate example and want to know about if this is scientificaly possible. It really captivated my attention and it's the most memorable exhibit for myself.
- The exhibit that I found the most interesting to view would be the Gene Editing Exhibit because it is interesting to see its future implications
Future Exploration:Would love to explore ethical concerns of animal transplants supporting human life. If its possible, it could save a lot of human lives.
- However, the exhibit that I think applies most to my life and my future aspirations would be the AI exhibit. This exhibit showcases the real-life applications of the stuff we are learning in class.
- The area of technology showcase at the museum that I want to learn about further is Artificial Inteligence. AI has been increasing exponentially in terms of its capabilities and I want to learn what it can potentially do in the future.

More about surrogacy

While facing hurdles like miscarriages and genetic complications, eGenesis has raised significant funding and made strides in de-PERV’ing pig genomes, bringing xenotransplantation closer to reality.

  • Researchers employed CRISPR-Cas9 to produce sterile male animals lacking the NANOS2 fertility gene.
  • Transplanted stem cells from donor animals allowed these surrogates to produce active donor sperm, achieving a major step in livestock breeding.Bulleted list

In Memoriam: Stephen Benton

- This article reflects on the life and work of Professor Stephen Benton whose work is displayed in the Optiker Exhibit

- In the beginning, Benton's work was just seen as a new art form without practical application but now we have found uses for this style of art. It is now used on credit cards and currencies as a form of proving authenticity.

THE WORLD'S LARGEST HOLOGRAM COLLECTION

- The MIT Museum houses the world's largest collection of holograms, boasting over 2,000 pieces, including pioneering works by holography innovator Stephen Benton.

- Not all of the Holograms they have are displayed in the Optiker exhibit because it only contains the work of Stephen Benton
