Socrates, one of the founding fathers of Western philosophy, initiated his reflections through dialogues with his students. His Socratic method is characterized by irony, which, using critical confrontation, brings to light contradictions and casts shadows on the truth. The truth, in fact, is what one seeks within oneself; Socrates pretended to be ignorant and, through studied questions, forced the interlocutor to explore their own beliefs until they encountered contradictions regarding the initial thesis. This approach, although it may seem 'annoying', is comparable to a gadfly that torments both humans and animals and allows one to go beyond superficial knowledge. His dialectical method, defined in Greek by the word élenchos, materializes in a deep and rigorous argumentation. FROM IRONY TO MAIEUTICS The transition from irony to maieutics represents another fundamental aspect of Socratic thought. Maieutics, a term derived from the art of midwifery, alludes to the work of the obstetrician; Socrates, in a sense, positioned himself as the 'midwife of souls'. For him, the answers to the most important questions can only be found within oneself. The questions posed by Socrates during a dialogue touch upon the sphere of definition and understanding. He conceived philosophy as a constant tension towards the truth: once one knows the truth, a person becomes wise and knows how to act in the best possible way.

Socrate, uno dei padri fondatori della filosofia occidentale, avviava le sue riflessioni attraverso dialoghi con i suoi allievi. Il suo metodo socratico si caratterizza per l'ironia, che, utilizzando il confronto critico, porta alla luce le contraddizioni e getta ombre sulla verità. La verità, infatti, è ciò che si cerca dentro di sé; Socrate si fingeva ignorante e, attraverso domande studiate, costringeva l'interlocutore a esplorare le proprie convinzioni fino a incorrere in contraddizioni rispetto alla tesi iniziale. Questo approccio, sebbene possa risultare “fastidioso”, è paragonabile a un tafano che tormenta tanto gli esseri umani quanto gli animali, e permette di andare oltre un sapere superficiale. Il suo metodo dialettico, definito in greco con la parola élenchos, si concretizza in un'argomentazione profonda e rigorosa. DALL’IRONIA ALLA MAIEUTICA Il passaggio dall'ironia alla maieutica rappresenta un altro aspetto fondamentale del pensiero socratico. La maieutica, termine che deriva dall'arte di far partorire, allude al lavoro dell'ostetrica; Socrate, in un certo senso, si poneva come "ostetrico delle anime". Per lui, le risposte alle domande più importanti si trovano solo dentro di sé. Le domande poste da Socrate durante un dialogo toccano tutte la sfera della definizione e della comprensione. Egli concepiva la filosofia come una costante tensione verso la verità: una volta che si conosce la verità, una persona diventa sapiente e sa agire nel miglior modo possibile.
