What is a possessive's?

Explain this example in your own words

ANA'S DOG

A possessive noun is a noun form used to show ownership or a direct connection. It’s commonly recognized by the apostrophe (') and letter s at the end.

What are the different kinds of possessive nouns?

1. Singular Nouns For most singular nouns, add an apostrophe and an "s" to form the possessive.

Examples : The dog's leash (The leash belonging to the dog) My brother's car (The car belonging to my brother) The teacher's book (The book belonging to the teacher)

2. Plural Nouns Ending in "s"For plural nouns that already end in "s," simply add an apostrophe after the "s."

Examples: The students' computers (The computers belonging to the students) My cousins' toys (The toys belonging to my cousins) The teachers' books (The books belonging to the teachers)

3. Plural Nouns Not Ending in "s"For plural nouns that do not end in "s," add an apostrophe and an "s" to form the possessive.

Examples: The children's toys (The toys belonging to the children) The men's room (The room belonging to the men) The women's meeting (The meeting for the women)

4. Compound NounsFor compound nouns, add the possessive form to the last word.

Examples: My mother-in-law's recipe (The recipe belonging to my mother-in-law) The commander-in-chief's decision (The decision made by the commander-in-chief)

5. Joint PossessionWhen two or more people own something together, add an apostrophe and "s" to the last person’s name.

Examples: John and Mary's house (The house belonging to both John and Mary) Tom and Jerry's adventure (The adventure belonging to both Tom and Jerry)

6. Individual PossessionWhen two or more people own things individually, add an apostrophe and "s" to each person’s name.

Examples: John's and Mary's biclycles (John owns a bicycle and Mary owns a different bicycle) Tom's and Jerry's adventures (Tom has his adventures and Jerry has his)

7. Inanimate ObjectsWhile possessives are often used with people and animals, they can also be used with inanimate objects, although sometimes a "of" construction is preferred.

Examples: The magazine's cover (The cover of the magazine) The car's engine (The engine of the car) However, sometimes it sounds more natural to use "of": The cover of the book The engine of the car
