O clima de Portugal é temperado mediterrâneo, embora com algumas diferenças regionais.

Toma Nota:

O clima assume características verdadeiramente mediterrâneas. O inverno é suave e menos chuvoso e o verão quente, prolongado e seco.

O clima adquire feição atlântica ou marítima, que é mais acentuada no norte litoral. A amplitude térmica anual é mais baixa. Os invernos são pluviosos e frios. Os verões menos quentes e longos, do que no Sul de Portugal.

O clima adquire uma feição continental, que é mais acentuada no norte interior, onde a amplitude térmica anual é mais elevada. Os invernos são frios e rigorosos e os verões muito quentes. A precipitação ocorre, no inverno, muitas vezes em forma de neve.

Os invernos tornam-se mais frios e chuvosos e os verões mais frescos e pluviosos devido à altitude.

Portugal insere-se na zona dos climas temperados.

A Floresta Mediterrânea é o bioma predominante em Portugal continental.

No entanto, existem algumas diferenças:

Floresta Caducifólia

Floresta Mediterrânea

Carvalho-alvarinho Desenvolve-se idealmente em climas húmidos, oceânicos, onde se sinta pouco a secura estival, e necessita de muita água e solos com boa retenção de água, apresentando baixa tolerância a frios intensos ou geadas. Ocorre em bosques caducifólios mistos, mas também pode formar bosques onde é a espécie principal.

Pinheiro Manso O pinheiro-manso é uma conífera (árvores que produzem pinhas). Relativamente ao clima, suporta condições de secura, aridez e é pouco exigente quanto à quantidade de chuva que recebe, desenvolvendo-se melhor em zonas com temperaturas elevadas e muita exposição à luz solar (chamam-lhe, por isso, xerófita). Tem sensibilidade ao frio e à neve.

Pinheiro-bravo Árvore de grande porte, com folhas em forma de agulha. Resistente à seca, ao frio e às geadas, o pinheiro-bravo consegue crescer em condições desfavoráveis, com exceção para a sombra, pois é intolerante ao ensombramento. O pinhal de Leiria terá sido uma das primeiras iniciativas a promover o aumento da espécie em Portugal: foi mandando plantar pelo rei D. Afonso III (1210-1279), e a sua área foi ampliada por ordem de D. Dinis, entre 1279 e 1325, com sementeiras de pinheiro-bravo ao longo da costa.

Carvalho-negral Em Portugal é muito abundante no norte e centro, sendo comum nos cumes das serras, encostas e planaltos, predominando nos solos graníticos e de xistos. Suporta muito bem o frio, a neve e as geadas, bem como períodos secos, e chuva intensa. Árvore de folha caduca, cujos frutos são as bolotas.

Sobreiro O sobreiro é uma árvore, mãe da cortiça. Trata-se de uma árvore de folha persistente. O sobreiro consegue sobreviver às altas temperaturas e escassez de água típicas do verão no clima mediterrânico: tem folhas pequenas e raízes extensas e profundas para a captação da água em profundidade. A sua casca peculiar, rugosa e espessa, que envolve tronco e ramos – a cortiça – constitui uma importante barreira natural de proteção contra o fogo. Graças às características da cortiça como isolante, o sobreiro é, por isso, uma espécie resistente aos incêndios.

Alfarrobeira A alfarrobeira existe em destinos de clima ameno, com pouca chuva, sem geada e onde as temperaturas raramente baixam aos 10 graus centígrados, O clima do sul de Portugal é, por isso, acolhedor para a alfarrobeira, capaz de crescer em solos calcários, arenosos ou argilosos, inclusive com elevada salinidade. Por isso, as alfarrobas crescem nos terrenos calcários e pedregosos do Barrocal algarvio.

Castanheiro O castanheiro desenvolve-se bem em climas temperados e as condições ideais ao seu desenvolvimento encontram-se em locais de temperatura e humidade médias, onde as chuvas cheguem pelo menos aos 600 mm anuais – mais de 100 mm no Verão. Desenvolve-se em zonas costeiras ou montanhosas, de média altitude, com verões quentes e húmidos, e invernos pouco rigorosos.

Azinheira A azinheira é um carvalho de folha persistente que produz bolotas mais doces. A azinheira é uma das árvores existentes no Alentejo. Consegue viver em condições pouco convidativas, como verões escaldantes e invernos gélidos, e crescer em zonas semiáridas ou áridas, nos mais variados tipos de solo, incluindo zonas pedregosas e escarpadas pouco ou nada férteis, e em altitudes elevadas, povoando a maioria das serras interiores portuguesas.

Garrano Espécie animal mediterrânea, com influência atlântica, existente em florestas caducifólias (interior Norte e Centro litoral de Portugal continental).

Lince Ibérico Espécie animal existente em todo o sul de Portugal continental, em floresta com vegetação tipicamente mediterrânea.

Biomas secundários da floresta mediterrânea

• Pode haver algumas pequenas árvores;
• A vegetação é arbustiva, muito densa e fechada com folha persistente.

Maquis

Garrigue

• A cobertura vegetal é menos densa e rasteira;

• Predominam plantas aromáticas, como o alecrim, a lavanda e o rosmaninho.

• Coberto arbóreo pouco denso;

• Estrato herbáceo perene (pastagens);
• Predominam os sobreiros;
• Existe, sobretudo, no Alentejo.

Montado

O bioma de floresta mediterrânea apresenta-se, em algumas áreas, bastante degradado, dando lugar a biomas secundários, como o maquis e o garrigue, onde as espécies arbóreas vão desaparecendo, dando lugar às espécies arbustivas e aromáticas.

Arquipélago dos açores

A vegetação típica é de folha caduca, densa e com árvores de grande porte.Existe a introdução de outras espécies, como os fetos, as hortênsias e as coníferas.

Arquipélago da madeira

A vegetação é densa, de folha persistente e adaptada aos invernos suaves e pouco chuvosos, tornando a designação de Laurissilva. A Laurissilva é composta por árvores como o loureiro, a urze, o til e o vinhático.

Nas regiões mais húmidas e frias do Norte predomina a floresta caducifólia (folha caduca), com árvores como o carvalho, o pinheiro bravo e o plátano. A Floresta Caducifólia é constituída maioritariamente por árvores altas e de grandes folhas.
