Our ear canal, also known as the ear canal or external auditory meatus, is a tubular structure that connects the outer ear to the middle ear. To understand ourselves better, it is the tube that we have from the entrance to the ear through our ear to the eardrum, which is where the middle ear begins. The tympanic membrane is also called the eardrum. This separates the outer ear from the middle ear. When sound waves reach the tympanic membrane they cause the membrane to vibrate. These vibrations are subsequently transferred to the ossicles in the middle ear.

The ear is the organ of hearing. It is divided into three parts, external ear, middle ear and internal ear.

The snail-shaped cochlea transforms vibrations from the middle ear into nerve impulses. These impulses travel to the brain along the cochlear nerve, also known as the "auditory nerve." The semicircular canals look like three tiny interconnected tubes.
