THE BLACK FRIDAY

Consectetur adipiscing elit

The Black Friday comes from the 1950s. This starts the day after Thanksgiving and it is the occasion for American to buy their Christmas gifts. At the origin, the name was given to this day because there were so many people on the road after Thanksgiving that they could not drive. Hence the French expression "Noir de monde".

The origins of Thanksgiving

The Pilgrims of the Plymouth Colony coming from England held the first Thanksgiving in 1621. They landed in America on their ship, the Mayflower, in December 1620. Indeed, they decided to leave England in order to practice their religion in peace. Only half of the Pilgrims survived that first winter : many of them died from starvation, cold and sickness. In the automn, a group of Indigenous called the Wampanoag and one in particular named Squanto helped the Pilgrims Fathers learning how to grow crops. That time, the harvest was good and to thank the Indigenous, the Pilgrims invited them to a big feast that lasted 3 days. They called this day "Thanksgiving".

TRADITIONS FOR THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is a very famous celebration, especially in the United States. The Americans have different ways to celebrate it.

THE REAL STORY BEHIND THANKSGIVING

When the Pilgrims Fathers arrived, they brought diseases (=maladies) with them. The Indigenous or Native Americans died because of them. Also, the Pilgrims gave them blankets (=couvertures) with virus to kill them and have their lands. Some Indigenous were also captured and sold as slaves (=esclaves).

Even if today, Thanksgiving is a happy celebration, the truth is not so pretty...
