Where are you from? I hail from the grand city of Salzburg, which, in my time, was a part of the Archbishopric of Salzburg in what is now Austria. I was born on January 27, 1756, in the house located on the Getreidegasse, a charming street in the heart of the city. Salzburg, nestled among the beautiful Alps, was then a lively and culturally rich place, known for its musical tradition, thanks to the influence of the church and the many fine musicians who resided there. Did you ever knew Beethoven? Ludwig van Beethoven—a name that now echoes through the annals of music history. We were contemporaries, though our paths did not cross as often as one might expect. I did indeed know of Beethoven, and I heard of his talents even while I was still living in Vienna.

Questions 1 & 2

For who were your compositons? My compositions were written for many different people and occasions. Some works were created for specific patrons or aristocratic families, as was the custom of the time. My pieces for the court of Salzburg, for instance, were often intended for Emperor Joseph II and the noble families who supported me. I also composed for the church—many of my sacred works were meant for liturgical services, such as masses, vespers, and motets. Who inspired you to be a muscician? From a very young age, I was blessed with the gift of music, as well as a most extraordinary father, Leopold Mozart. He was not only a talented composer and violinist but also a diligent teacher. He nurtured my early musical abilities, guiding me with a firm yet loving hand. Under his tutelage, I was able to compose my first works before I could even fully understand the intricacies of music theory.
