the moon

Description

The Moon is Earth's satellite, and we can usually see it in the night sky. Other planets also have moons or "natural satellites". The Moon is thought to have formed about 4.5 billion years ago, NOT long after Earth. In the Solar System, it is the largest and most massive satellite in relation to its parent planet, the fifth largest and most massive moon overall.

"Ilike to think that the Moon is there even if I am not looking at it"

- Albert Einstein

The lunar surface

The lunar surface is covered in lunar dust and marked by mountains, except for the "seas" the vast flat areas remains of ancient lava flows.

Humains finally landed on the Moon on July 21, 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their lunar ship (the Apollo 11)) on the surface of the moon. Then, as half the world watched him on television, Armstrong was the first human to touch the Moon. While the third crew remember, Michael Collins, remained in lunar orbit.

Before the man arrived on the Moon, the United States and the USSR sent robots to the Moon. These robots would orbit the Moon or land on its surface. The robots were the first man-made objects to touch the Moon.

The landing...

"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind"-Neil Armstrong
