Digital citizenship is the ability to navigate our digital environments in a way that's safe and responsible and to actively and respectfully engage in these spaces. Although we live and interact in the digital world in a similar way to the offline world, we're not always as mindful of our actions online. We can sometimes act without realizing how it could affect our reputation, safety and growth as digital citizens. In the meantime, everything we do online continues to affect and define our digital world and selves. Digital media also provide unique opportunities for everyone to get involved, to speak out and to make change both online and offline. Our actions in our online world can have a real impact and we all have a role to play as active digital citizens. Did you know: It takes just 10 percent of the people in a community to set its values. Even a single voice can make other people less likely to conform and more likely to speak out.

Throughout 2020, the inaugural year for Local Development & Society, our lives and communities have been turned upside down due to the challenges and disruptions surrounding COVID-19. Additionally, the tensions, debates, and global protests around racism and racial inequality have come to the forefront at a level not seen in generations. On top of all of these changes, particularly in the United States, we find ourselves in an election year that is characterized by extreme social and political divisions, polarization, and battle lines. All pose a direct threat to local community well-being, our wider society, and to the collective, democratic process by which we achieve local development. Furthermore, these crises have forced many of us to reexamine empathy and return to its critical role in fostering local understanding, cooperation, interaction, social support, and effective community-based leadership.

When you’re online, it can be hard to remember that there’s a human being on the other side of the screen. Sometimes, people say things online that they would never say in real life. Because of this, it’s important to take extra steps to be empathetic. Online empathy tips: 1) WATCH HOW YOU ARE FEELING We don’t always realize how we’re feeling when we’re communicating online. Listen to your body! Is your heart racing? Are your muscles tense? If so, it's time to get offline for a while. 2) TAKE A BREAK BEFORE YOU RESPOND If you aren’t feeling cool, calm, take a break before you respond. Take some deep breaths and take time away from the screen. 3) WORK IT OUT FACE TO FACE If you know this person in real life, try to work things out face-to-face. Remember that other people can't tell how you're feeling online either, so it's easy for drama to blow up. 4) IMAGINE THEY'RE NEXT TO YOU Remember that the people we talk to and play with online are real. Even if you don’t know them, try to imagine the person you’re talking to is with you before you respond online. 5) DO TALK ABOUT HOW YOU'RE FEELING It’s important to make sure get help and support when things are bothering you online, so talk it out with someone you know and trust.
