Theodore Robert Bundy was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped, and murdered dozens of young women during the 1970s and possibly earlier. The victims of his interest were young white women between 15 and 25 years old and, mostly university students. After more than a decade of denying it, he confessed to the murders of women he committed in seven states, between 1974 and 1978. The real number of victims is unknown.
who is this character
his case
The FBI verified 36 murders, for which he was sentenced to death and executed by electric chair on January 24, 1989.Bundy's victims found him attractive and charismatic, and he took advantage of this to gain their trust. He usually approached them in public places and pretended to be disabled or injured, or pretended to be an authority figure. After intimidating them, he attacked them and took them to a more remote place. He would sometimes visit the places where the murders had occurred for hours and care for the corpse and have sexual relations with it until decomposition or destruction by wild animals made any further interaction impossible. He decapitated at least twelve of his victims and kept some of the heads in his apartment for a time as souvenirs. On some occasions, he simply broke into residences and beat victims to death while they slept.
Settled in Tacoma, Louise met Johnnie Culpepper Bundy, an Army cook whom she married in May 1951 and whose surname Ted would later adopt. The couple had four children, but Ted never created an emotional bond with his mother's husband.
The biological son of an Air Force veteran and Louise Cowell, he lived his first four years at his maternal grandparents' house. During this time, he believed that his grandparents were his parents and that his mother was his older sister. In 1950, Ted and his mother moved to Tacoma, Washington, with other relatives, due to his maternal grandfather's mistreatment of his grandmother and mother.
childhood
Before starting to kill, he committed a series of robberies in homes and businesses. On January 4, 1974, he entered the room of 18-year-old university student Joni Lenz, whom he beat with an iron bar and raped. The next day, the young woman was found badly injured and survived with permanent brain damage. Bundy was twenty-seven years old at the time.On the night of January 31, 1974, he attacked 21-year-old University of Washington psychology student Lynda Ann Healy. Bundy entered her bedroom, knocked her unconscious, and took her out of the school. No one noticed the young woman's absence until the next day. The Police did not establish any connection between the two attacks and no further tests or studies of the crime scene were carried out. Lynda Ann's remains were discovered a year later on a nearby mountain.
Before the murders
During the winter and summer of 1974, several university students and young mothers disappeared. It is estimated that there were eight victims whom he attacked at night, until he began to do so during the day. The Police had started an investigation and had descriptions that pointed to a man who requested help from girls who were never seen again. The individual had the peculiarity of being loaded with books and having one arm in a cast or sling. There were also witnesses who observed a man who used to have "problems" starting his Volkswagen, which had been seen wandering around the site where two of the murdered young women disappeared. On February 9, 1974, 20-year-old Carol Valenzuela disappeared from Vancouver, Canada. His body was not discovered until October along with another unidentified body.On March 12, 1974, 19-year-old Donna Manson was last seen while attending a jazz concert on the campus of the university where she was a student.
beginning of the murders
On April 17 of that same year, 18-year-old Susan Rancourt was walking on the grounds of Central Washington State College when she disappeared. On May 6, 1974, Roberta Parks, 20, disappeared after meeting some friends for coffee. It never reached its destination. Parks encountered an apparently injured man who asked him for help loading some things into his vehicle. She was never seen again. June 1, 1974, Brenda Ball, 22, left the Flame Tavern in Burien, Washington after telling her friends that she was going to find someone to take her to Sun City, California. The last time she was seen she was talking to a man with her arm in a sling. Nineteen days later it was discovered that Ball never reached his destination.
The early morning of June 11, 1974, Georgann Hawkins, 18, a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity in Seattle, disappeared after saying goodbye to her boyfriend and going to get some books for a Spanish exam. Her roommate and the dorm manager reported her disappearance the next morning. On July 14 of the same year, college student Janice Ott left a note for her roommate letting her know that she was going to bike to Lake Sammamish Park. There he was seen talking to a man who had his arm in a cast and was asking for help loading books into his car. The same day he kidnapped Denise Naslund, who was spending the day with her boyfriend and friends. His remains were found near a service road in Issaquah, twenty-seven kilometers east of Seattle and a short distance from Lake Sammamish. Apart from these murders, he committed many more in Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Florida , Oregon and California.
