What are they used for?
COMPARATIVES To say how similar or how different two places, objects, people, actions, etc. are 3 types of comparatives
SUPERLATIVES
What are they used for?
COMPARATIVES To say how similar or how different two places, objects, people, actions, etc. are 3 types of comparatives
SUPERLATIVES To highlight 1 aspect of a person, object, action, etc. from the rest of people, objects, actions, etc.
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES: compare 2 nouns
Short adjectives (1 syllable / 2 syllables ending in -y). → adjective + ER THAN My car is older than yours Children are noisier than adults Today is hotter than yesterday (C + V + C = double consonant) He’s more bored than me. Long adjectives (2 or more syllables). more + adjective + than She is more intelligent than him. The new sofa is more comfortable than the old one.
SUPERIORITY
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES: compare 2 nouns
AS + ADJECTIVE + AS English is as difficult as German. THE SAME AS (2 identical nouns) This dress is the same as that one.
EQUALITY
LESS + ADJECTIVE + THAN This film is less interesting than the other one.
INFERIORITY
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES: compare 2 nouns
After THAN or AS…
- She is taller than ME (object pronoun)
- She is taller than I AM (subject pronoun + verb)
- She is taller than I
COMPARATIVE ADVERBS: compare 2 actions
Short adverbs(1 syllable) → adverb + ER THAN He drives faster than me Long adverbs(2 or more syllables). more + adverb + than He walks more slowly than me. NOT slowlier
