SCBA is a type of respirator that provides breathable air. They are usually worn in environments where there is low oxygen or the air contains smoke, dust or other airborne contaminants. There are four components of an SCBA, including a face mask or mouthpiece connected with air supply, a pressure regulator, a carrying frame and tanks with compressed air or oxygen.
Self-contained Breathing Apparatus
Carabiner
Firefighters often use carabiners to connect ropes and rescue equipment. Other uses for carabiners include creating friction, in a process called friction breaking, when dealing with heavy loads and can even substitute for knots.
Radio
Firefighter radios are built to withstand extreme conditions firefighters may encounter on scene: typically being resistant to heat, water and more. This allows Ruri to communicate clearly with her crew on calls.
Left Leg Pocket
Ruri keeps 20 feet of red webbing, tied in a loop, with a carabiner attached on the end in her left leg pocket. The webbing is a strap of synthetic material such as nylon, tied into a loop. This setup can be used to drag heavy objects, move injured people, secure equipment and more.

Firefighter Helmet
Made of tough leather, the firefighter helmet is flame-resistant and protects a firefighter's head from debris. However, Ruri says a major reason why these helments are used is because of firefighter tradition. While these helmets might not protect them as well as more modern ones, she says most firefighters prefer the traditional leather helmet style.

Turnout Gear
Turnout gear is comprised of three layers: the outer shell, the moisture barrier and the inner liner. The outer shell protects firefighters from direct flames. It also has a high limiting oxygen index (LOI), which helps prevent the gear from catching on fire. The outer shell also protects from cuts and tears in the suit, which is vital as firefighters encounter many sharp objects, such as tree branches, on scene. The moisture barrier protects firefighters from any liquids they may encounter — such as chlorine, gasoline, and more — especially while putting out fires. The moisture barrier also absorbs moisture, allowing firefighters to sweat freely. The thermal layer traps air in between layers of material, which provides protection from the heat of fire.

Right Leg Pocket
Ruri keeps work gloves, spanner wrenches and wire cutters in this pocket. Spanner wrenches are used for tightening and loosening hose connections.
Reflective Trim
Reflective trim ensures that firefighters are visible to their crew or bystanders even in low-light conditions.
