The Tudors

The Tudors ruled England from 1485 to 1603. During that time, England:

  • began to establish its naval supremacy and acquired the first colonies;
  • broke away from the Catholic Church;
  • prevented a Spanish invasion;
  • laid the foundation of a modern society based on a prosperous mercantile middle class

Portraits of Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I needed her people's support but couldn't travel because of threats from her enemies. Instead, she used paintings to show herself to the public. These portraits were sent across the country, and nobles displayed them to show loyalty. At first, the paintings showed her simply, like other wealthy women of the time. Later, they became more symbolic, showing her as a powerful and almost mythical "Virgin Queen," with items like a globe or crown.From the portraits, we know she had pale skin, red-golden hair, brown eyes, a hooked nose, thin lips, and high cheekbones. Pale skin was fashionable because it showed wealth, and Elizabeth avoided the sun and wore makeup to keep her complexion light.

the first of the Stuarts

James I (1566-1625)

He was the son of Mary queen of Scotland, became the king of England, Scotland and Ireland. He was a protestant and based his rule on the theory of the "divine right of kings" which made him the rappresentative of God on Earth. He only talk to the Parliament to ask for money. The major problem was the religion, a group of radical Catholics conspired to blow up the king in the houses of Parliament ('Gunpowder Plot') but they were discovered on 5 november 1605 and later executed.There was also some extreme Protestant, called Puritans, they had a high morality and did not want to live in a country which, they belive, was going to fall into moral decline. A group of them (Pilgrims Fathers) emigrate from England for America in the 1620 and founded New Plymouth.

The Sonnet

The Renaissance was a golden age for poetry, especially for sonnets. The sonnet, invented by Giacomo da Lentini in the 13th century, was refined by poets like Dante and Petrarch. It was introduced by Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard. Petrarch’s "Canzoniere" inspired European poets, focusing on themes like unreturned love and longing.
