Fitopolis - La città in evoluzione

Patrick Geddes (1854-1932), botanico scozzese, fu pioniere dell’urbanistica e sostenitore di un approccio evolutivo, integrando biologia e sociologia nello sviluppo sostenibile delle città.

A differenza della visione tradizionale che vedeva la città come un insieme di edifici e strade, Geddes la concepiva come un organismo dinamico, dove la struttura fisica e la vita sociale sono interconnesse e in continua evoluzione.

Geddes paragonò la città alla madrepora, con una struttura fisica (scheletro) e una vita pulsante interna, evidenziando l’interdipendenza tra infrastrutture e dinamiche sociali.

Patrick Geddes applicò i principi dell’evoluzione di Darwin e le idee di Huxley all’urbanistica, vedendo le città come organismi viventi e promuovendo il mutualismo e l’adattamento per favorire il progresso sociale ed ecologico.

Geddes concepì la città come un organismo vivente in evoluzione, che si adatta costantemente all’ambiente e richiede una pianificazione sostenibile per il progresso sociale.

Thomas Huxley paragona l'esistenza ad un'arena dove si scontrano gladiatori, fornendo una visione distorta dell'evoluzionismo darwiniano.

Petr Kropotkin in "Il mutuo appoggio. Un fattore dell’evoluzione" del 1902, sottolineò come la competizione tra individui avvenga solo in condizioni di abbondanza, mentre in situazioni estreme si ha un mutuo aiuto.

Le teorie di Geddes vennero supportate da numerosi studi scientifici come quelli di Lynn Margulis, che provarono l'esistenza della simbiosi.
