Fashion and Fabrics by the Numbers

Fashion is a global business, and numbers show how big it is. Did you know that China is the world’s largest exporter of clothes? Every year, China exports over $170 billion worth of clothes to countries like the United States and Europe. Bangladesh is another big exporter, selling more than $30 billion in clothes each year. On the other hand, the United States is the biggest importer, spending over $80 billion on clothes every year.

Fabrics also travel around the world. Cotton is one of the most important fabrics, and India produces about 6 million tons of cotton every year. Wool comes from countries like Australia, which produces around 340,000 tons of wool annually. Silk is smaller in numbers but very valuable. China produces about 140,000 tons of silk each year, making it the top silk producer.

Different fabrics are used for different clothes. For example: • Cotton is used for 60% of T-shirts sold worldwide. • Wool is in 40% of winter sweaters. • Silk is in 20% of luxury dresses.
