Media ownership concentration

Media ownership refers to the people, or rather companies, that own the media (what we hear, see and read). Media systems are extremely condensed, meaning that a small number of big companies own most media, regarding cinema production, movie distribution, platforms, and other aspects of the media environment.

This creates what's known as

VERTICAL integration

Vertical integration happens when media corporations try to control as many parts of the production process as they can, trying to avoid the inclusion of other people unconnected with their corporation. This makes them the owners of all aspects of the production and distribution of a single type of media product, as it says in Croteau & Hoynes.
