WHO IS SHE?

Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Alabama. After her parents' breakup she moved to Pine Level with her mother and little brother Sylvester. She grew up in a context marked by poverty and discrimination, but also by a strong determination to face difficulties. As a young girl, Rosa attended the Industrial School for Girls in Montgomery and, later, the Alabama State Teachers College, but was forced to interrupt her education to care for her grandmother and mother. She married Raymond Parks, a barber and activist in 1932. Their marriage was based on strong support for their commitment to social justice.

WHAT SHE DID?

She is known for her peaceful protest on December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, when she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. She was a black girl who suffered racism. Jim Crow laws said that blacks were forced to sit at the back of buses and give up their seats to whites if the front seats were full, because he wanted separation between whites and blacks on public transportation. When Rosa Parks refused to get up, she was arrested. This simple gesture led to countless protests. It was the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a mass protest that lasted over a year (381 days) led, including by Martin Luther King Jr. The boycott led to the desegregation of public transportation in the city, marking a symbolic and practical victory for the movement for civil rights.

Rosa Parks' goal was to end racial segregation and achieve equal civil rights for all, especially the right of African Americans to live without discrimination in transportation, public places, and society.
