DEFINITION OF E-WASTE
What is E-Waste?E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electronic and electrical equipment (EEE) that is no longer functional or desired. This includes devices such as mobile phones, computers, household appliances, and medical equipment. E-waste often contains valuable materials like gold, silver, and rare earth elements, alongside hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, posing risks to health and the environment if not managed properly.
+62 million tons
of e-waste were generated globally, projected to increase to 82 million tonnes by 2030.
ONLY22.3%
of e-waste was formally recycled in 2022, highlighting a significant gap in sustainable management.
$91 billion
worth of Valuable resources, comprening metals, were embedded in e-waste in 2022, but much remains uncollected.

RISKS FOR HUMANs
E-waste can cause very big problems for the enviroment.
- Soil contamination
- Water pollution
- Air pollution
RISKS FOR THE HUMAN
There are many risks for the human body, and can affect both children and pregnant women. There could be consequences such:
- Neurological damage
- Immune system suppression
- Toxic exposure
- Hormonal disruption
RISKS FOR PEOPLE WHO DISPOSE E-WASTE
- Disposing e-waste could represent a risk for the ones who do this as a job because they’re constantly exposed to many toxic materials that if inhaled, touched or ingested could cause serious damage to the human body.
- People who dispose e-waste must always pay attention to the big quantity of sharpen components that could hurt them even by accident
WASTE OF IMPORTANT RESOURCES
Wasting important resources, like the ones that are contained in electric components, could increase global pollution, because they’re very difficult to recycle
- Wasting those materials could cause a loss of primary resources used to make components for many devices, and consequentially the rise of those component’s prices
- The uncontrolled recycle can cause serious damage to the environment, for example water could be polluted cause of the toxic materials mixed into it
recycled
The WEEE Directive and the RoHS Directive tackle the issue of the growing amount of WEEE: -collection, recovery and recycling -making it harder for exporters - reduces the administrative burden
recycled
Cycling process generally involves these steps:1) Collection 2) Transportation 3) Shredding and Sorting 4) Processing and Recovery 5) Proper Disposal 6) Reuse and Refurbishment
The evolution of e-waste is linked to the - Continuous production of new devices - Which leads to the rapid devaluation of old devices - And finally to the increase in production

After realizing that the incorrect disposal of e-waste could lead to serious damage to the environment (such as contaminating water or soil), recycling programs have been activated that allow the recovery of precious materials and disposal of others
