Earthquake of Japan

- Description of the natural disaster giving general information about it? - When did it happened and how long did it last? On 22 May 1960, an earthquake with an epicentre in the Chilean city of Valdivia reached an intensity of 9.5 on the Richter scale.
- How did the disaster affect the environment? (e.g.: plants, animals...)? -Damage to beaches, parks, buildings, forests...? The tremor that triggered the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami was caused by a distortion in the boundary between two plates near Japan's oceanic trench.
- When and where happened? Produced a tidal wave of great proportions that devastated mainly Valdivia, Corral, Puerto Saavedra, Isla Mocha, Maullín, Ancud, Castro, among other localities.
- How did the disaster impact on people's home and lives? - Were people hurt or displaced? How did it affect their health and daily life? The people they were left without houses, food, money, water, etc. Many people died, others got sick, others lost children, animals, relatives, husbands, etc.
- What did the goverment do to help people during and after the disaster? - What are the plans to prevent future disasters? Surenly the goverment collected money and distributed it, or say to workers like masons, builders, etc. to help.
- What lessons can we learn from the disaster? - How can we help preotect the environment and be prepared for future disasters? They required the use of steel and concrete, and specified thicker beams when timber was used.
