Diagram of Honda's VTEC engine. In which there are three rocker arms, a camshaft with different size profiles, and a control system.

The engine uses three rocker arms and a camshaft with different cam profiles to optimize performance at various speeds. At low speeds, only the smaller cam profiles are active for better fuel efficiency, while at high speeds, hydraulic pressure engages the larger cam profile which increases the power output. The engine's control system detects changes and makes proper adjustments, which cam profiles are being used, in the engine for the best performance possible. One of the great benefits of VTECs is their conservative nature regarding oil consumption. By having the ability to change the structure of the engine based on the speed that the car is ensuring that it is performing at its best level while operating. Therefore, the car becomes more fuel-efficient and oil dependency is lowered. The engine has further received lots of critical acclaim and is to be incorporated soon into the Honda S2000, Honda NSX, and race cars all over the racing industry.

Japan is not blessed with natural resources and is heavily dependent on other countries, especially the Middle East for oil. In 1973, the price for a barrel of oil tripled, from four dollars to twelve. Furthermore, Japan had already been facing steep yearly inflation rates. As a result, Japan’s economy entered a recession and saw a decrease in its gross national product (GNP) by around four percent. Ultimately, many Japanese citizens suffered greatly, and the economy too due to the 1973 oil crisis. Unfortunately, this happened once more in 1979. Japan's goverment then implemented policies regarding the conservation of energy. Doing their part, Honda developed the Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control engine to reduce oil consumption for the average driver! The first car to have their VTEC engine was the 1989 Integra XSi.
