CHEMISTRY OF SYSTEMS: Effect of pH

MENU

OVERVIEW

In many systems, like the human body and the environment, it is important to have pH controlled within a narrow range to support life and avoid negative consequences. For this project, you will choose one system from the list below to better understand the effects pH has on a system. Choice Options:

  1. Effects of pH on the ocean (ocean acidification)
  2. Effects of pH on the human body
  3. Effects of pH on plant growth (you can discuss hydroponic or aquaponic growing systems or soil pH)
  4. Effects of pH on aquatic systems (you can discuss acid rain, agricultural practices, industrial contributions, etc.)

OVERVIEW

Choose your topic and HOW you present your information. You will present the following information about your topic: 20 points total - RUBRIC HERE

  1. Describe and explain your system (4 points)
    1. What is pH range of your system? Or what are the pH ranges for your system?
    2. Describe what the system looks like when it is in balance. What organisms rely or need this pH range to live.
  2. Describe and explain what happens to your system when the pH gets out of range. (4 points)
    1. Please explain and describe what happens when the pH gets too high and too low.
    2. What negative effects does it have on living organisms or components of your system when out of balance?
  3. Describe the buffers in your system or what helps to keep the pH within range. (4 points)
    1. What happens when pH gets low or too high?
  4. Reflection (3 points) - At least 100 words
    1. What did you find most interesting about your topic?
    2. What new information did you learn?
    3. How did this relate to what you learned in module 3: chemical properties?
    4. What challenges did you discover through exploring your topic?
    5. Did this make you want to change anything you do in your life? If so, what?
    6. Did you like having choice of topic?
    7. Did you like having choice of submission type?
    8. What would you suggest changing for this project in the future?
  5. Creativity (3 points) - Effort, Neatness, and Overall Creativity
  6. Citations (2 points) - You can cite your resources using a citations engine or at least give me links to your resources
