Types of characters
Characters are classified according to their role, characteristics or how they change during the narrative. The most common are:
- Protagonist
- Antagonist
- Confidant
- Love interest
Protagonist
The protagonist is the main character of the story. The story is mostly about them. They are often the hero, and we see the story through their eyes.Examples:
- Simba (The king Leon)
- Elsa (Frozen)
- Miguel (Coco)
Antagonist
The antagonist is the character who is against the main character. They try to stop the main character’s plans or dreams. This fight between them makes the story interesting and exciting.Examples:
- Evil Queen (Snow White)
- Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)
- Ursula (The little Mermaid)
Confidant
A confidant character is a close friend of the main character. The main character trusts them and tells them secrets, feelings, and thoughts. This friend listens and gives advice or help. Because of this, the audience can understand the main character’s problems and story better.Examples:
- Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King)
- Olaf (Frozen)
- Genie (Aladdin)
Love interest
The love interest is the character who has a romantic relationship with the main character. This relationship often helps the main character grow and make important choices in the story.Examples:
- Flynn Rider (Eugene) (Tangled)
- Li Shang (Mulan)
- Prince Naveen (The Princess and the frog)
What isCharacter Development?
Character development is...
When you read a story or watch a movie, you may see that some characters change from the start to the end. This change is called character development. It’s like how you grow and learn in real life, but for the character, it happens in the story!
How do characters change?
They change because of what happens to them like Simba from The Lion King. At first, he’s a scared cub who runs away from his problems, but after many adventures, he learns to be brave and becomes the king.
They change because of others:Remember Gru in Despicable Me? At first, he’s a mean villain who only cares about being the best bad guy, but the little girls he adopts help him become loving and kind.
They change because of what they feel:Sometimes a character learns something about themselves. For example, in Inside Out, Joy realizes that sadness isn’t always bad and that all emotions are important.
