International Partners

Engaging with the international partners was crucial in developing an understanding of the experiences of people living in a Global North country and how public attitudes, laws, and policies influence SDG progress. From commencement of the project they understood and accepted that their responses provided will be used to inform project recommendations and other portfolio sections. To minimize privacy concerns, the team refrained from asking invasively personal questions.

General Primary Research Ethical Considerations

Ethics application was not required for this project as the team did not collect primary data from members of the general public via a survey, if this was required it would have been necessary to ensure participants are of legal age and gain consent prior to collecting the information. Collection of sensitive personal data would require compliance with the UK's implementation of GDPR, known as the Data Protection Act 2018 (Gov.UK, 2018), and the Japanese equivalent, the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) (PIPC, 2023). Compliance with these pieces of legislation would involve reducing the extent of data collected to the minimum required, only storing sensitive data for as long as necessary, and storing the data securely. Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) does not apply as animals were not used at any point in the project. Human Tissue Act (2004) does not apply as no physiological samples were collected or used.

Secondary Data

A key part of working on this portfolio involved undertaking secondary research from an array of sources. Credible organizations were afforded a higher priority as sources, however that does constitute a full understanding, therefore the scope was widened to more opiniated sources where necessary such as newspaper articles and blog posts. Appropriate credit was granted to all sources in the form of in-text citations and references. Care was taken to ensure that copyrighted material is used in such a way that the authors rights are not infringed upon. To protect the wellbeing and dignity of populations, data pertaining to sensitive topics such as health and living standards was always handled respectfully. Where possible, Personally Identifiable Information (PII) was anonymized, and consent was obtained to use it.
