Borrowing Words or expressions taken directly from the source text and carried over into the target language

Calque Literal translation of a word from one language into another

Literal translation The literal translation of each word of a text. The target text and the source text must have the same word order, meaning and style

Indirect translation techiniques

Transposition A shift from one gramatical category to another, while still preserving the meaning

Modulation A change of perspective, adjusting the target text to express the same idea and meaning

Reformulation A creative process through which you have to express the source text in a completely different way

Adaptation The cultural elements of the source language are replaced with an equivalent cultural element of the target language
