This semester, you will work with an assigned peer to conduct two case analyses. For each case, one of you will write a Strategic Response Memo (SRM) and the other will write a reply with feedback. The SRM should provide the organization with recommendations on solving the most salient talent management or organizational finance challenge(s) presented in the case. The reply will be written from the point of view of the recipient of the SRM stating how the feedback will be used in the organization.

Guidelines

In your peer pairing, one of you will take the position of a lead manager in a major consulting firm hired by the organization’s governing board. The other will take the position of that organization’s chair of the board. The consulting group lead manager is charged with examining the organization and submitting a strategic response for immediate implementation that takes into consideration short- and long-term goals with a particular focus on the talent management functions. The organization’s chair will write a reply to the SRM with feedback, clarifying questions and an indication of how the feedback from the SRM will be used.

You and your partner will choose roles for #1 and then swap roles for #2.

  3. Feel free to use synchronous tools such as Zoom or Google Hangouts to work with your peer.
  4. Use the exemplar SRM and Chair’s Reply provided by your instructor as a guide for how to format the documents.
  5. The SRM and reply should not exceed 3 pages in length.
  6. The communication in this assignment is intended for use in a corporate setting, not an academic one. You should follow the standard guidelines for APA (7th edition) formatting when using citations. However, your documents should not be written as though it is a research article text.

More

  1. You will work with the same partner with whom you were paired for the Strategic Response Memo & Chair’s Reply #1.
  2. The person who played the role of the consultant in the last assignment will play the board chair and vice versa.
  3. You will write a Strategic Response Memo (SRM) and your peer will write a reply with feedback. But this time, you will submit your memo and response verbally using Canvas video in a Canvas discussion. Your written work will not be submitted.
  4. You will be assessed on your verbal delivery and content. (The SRM and Chair's Reply should not exceed the equivalent of 3 pages in length.)
  5. Use a space of your choosing (Google docs, MS Word online, etc.) to collaborate with your peer. Feel free to use synchronous tools such as Zoom or Google Meet to work with your peer.
  6. The communication in this assignment is intended for use in a corporate setting, not an academic one. When you support your comments with literature or authors, simply refer to them conversationally in the flow of your video remarks. (i.e., “My recommendation aligns with the work of Smith from his 2015 article…”)

Assignment Justification

What is this assignment format trying to achieve in terms of your EdD journey? As a scholar practitioner, you will find yourself in situations where others turn to you to offer expert advice about a topic or problem. These situations require you to extemporaneously convey ideas on the spot without the aid of visuals or written material. You need to be able to recall appropriate themes from the literature, combine ideas that support your points, and translate these ideas into practical statements geared to your audience. In the role of the chair, the ability to construct thoughtful questions and dilemmas of choice is also essential.

Information about submission:
  • Use the exemplar SRM and Chair’s Reply provided by your instructor as a guide for how to format the documents.
  • Both the SRM and its Chair’s Reply must be submitted to the group assignment link by the due date in order for this peer assignment to be considered on time. Keep this in mind as you work together to allow the responder sufficient time to read and digest the material provided in the SRM. Both parts of the assignment must be submitted by the deadline, and each peer pairing will receive the same grade.

  • Note: Since you can only upload one document to a Canvas assignment link, please combine both parts into a single document.

The Chair's Reply should:

  • Provide an indication of how the SRM was received by the organization requesting the analysis, and how the SRM resonated with the organization. For example, identify content and insights from the SRM that caused a new point of view not considered before; and
  • Provide a set of questions to the consultant that arises from reading the letter.

The Strategic Response Memo should:

  • Provide a brief synopsis and analysis of the situation, problem, and pending decision as described in the case. Keep in mind that the board members are generally familiar with the information presented in the case, therefore a brief synopsis is sufficient; and
  • Outline your recommendations and/or action plan to the pending decision and/or resolution to the most salient talent management problem(s) presented. This recommendation should draw upon supporting evidence from the course readings and the case.
