Postcards from the future

if a postcard from your future arrived – what would you want on it? Maybe it shows you spending more time doing what you love – seeing the grandkids, playing golf, relaxing in the sun, or simply enjoying your retirement without the ‘can I afford it?’ worry.

We are all busy people. We set ourselves standards to work hard and deliver at a high standard. But when do we take the time to notice the differences we are making in communities, the environment, future generations, the economy? This reflection aims to do just that.

If a postcard from your future arrived – what would you want on it?

  • The changes you made that made a difference?
  • Work which has helped you fulfil your passions?
  • The sense of pride in delivering something great?
  • Helping communities, the environment or to your colleagues/team?
  • Or simply spending more time enjoying what you love?

How to...

As I sit sipping cocktails on my latest cruise, I can’t help but reflect with pride and joy how we took a great Coastal Service into an exceptional one as we navigated Local Government Reorganisation. How brave we were to take the opportunities to work with new partners managing beautiful coastlines, supporting our communities and enhancing the environment. I am so pleased we had the courage to lead, reshape the organisation to secure all our futures working in the most fulfilling job I could have imagined. It has been hard work but we held the course when it got tough, with upsetting and challenging conversations with the public, politicians and colleagues but we found a way through and now fully reaping the rewards having delivered internationally recognised projects, creating a mosaic of sustainable habitats for our children’s children and also started the conversations to truly change behaviours as we all adapt to climate change. Wow, loved it and all with my Coastal Partners family… time for my next cocktail!

There’s now a more positive future for people, places and the environment along the south coast. Communities have a greater understanding of local biodiversity, the impact of climate change and what to do to help nature adapt. Though my contributions in this area are modest, they offer me a moment of gratitude by the promising signs ahead.’

To future me - Hey, how you doing? Remember that feeling of coming back to work after materinity leave and thinking how on earth am I going to balance it all?! Well if you're reading this, you clearly did it! Do what you've been telling yourself to do, but never have time for. Look at ALL the work you've done. I know it varies from graphics to public events, but you did it - with style of course. Things will change, responsibilies, co-workers and of course the sea level (and public responses about it all), but just look at the work you've done and keep going.

p.s. don't forget to give yourself all that credit for EVERYTHING as you seem to have forgotten how to recently!.
