Prima tappa dell'esilio
La prima tappa dell'esilio per Dante è stata Verona per sette lunghi anni, considerando che l'esilio è durato vent'anni.Dal 1303 al 1304 fu ospitato da Bartolomeo della Sala, fratello del Cagrande e dal 1312 al 1318 fu ospitato dallo stesso Cangrade.

Dopo la morte di Bartolomeo Della Sala, 1304, Dante girò molti paesini fino a stabilirsi in Luigiana per un anno, 1304 al 1305.

Quinta tappa dell'esilio
Dante giunge a Ravenna due volte: la prima volta nel 1318, presso la corte di Guido Novello da Polenta;Invece la seconda, fu l'ultima tappa dell'esilio poi muorì nella notte del 13 e il 14 settembre del 1321 per colpa di una febbre malarica.

Terza tappa dell'esilio
Dante si trasferì a Lucca nel 1308 dalla nobildonna, Gentucca, con cui avrebbe avuto una breve relazione sentimentale. Nel 1311 venne ospitato dal Conte Brandino nel castello di Prociano.
Venezia
Quarta tappa dell'esilio
Guido Novello mandò Dante, dal Doge Giovanni Soranzo a Venezia (1321) per un'ambasceria. Durante il viaggio di ritorno si ammala e muore.
