Vocabulary

+info

This plate was made in Paterna during the 14th century. Paterna, a city near Valencia, was an important center of ceramic production in the 14th and 15th centuries. The plate was created to celebrate a Christian marriage between Lope de Luna and Violant de Aragón, in 1339. Each family is represented in a coat of arms.

The coat of arms represents the family of the king of Aragon.

Hand of Fatima: Represents an open hand with an eye in the center. It is a Muslim symbol, it was used as an amulet in jewelry or painted on the walls of houses to avoid bad luck.

The dish has a white background and the drawings are green and black. This technique is known as "verde marganés" and comes from the caliphate of Córdoba.

This coat of arms represents the family "Luna de Paterna".

Christian king James I conquered Valencia in 1238. So, when the dish was made, Paterna was no longer Muslim, it was Christian. However, in the pottery workshops decorative themes and techniques could be Muslim or Christian.

- Coat: A coat of arms is a special picture that represents a family, group, or country. It is usually shown on a shield and has colors, shapes, and symbols that tell a story about the group. - Pottery workshops: places where people can learn and practice the art of making objects out of clay. - Jewelry: refers to decorative items people wear, like necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings.
