What is FASHION Photography
Fashion photography is a genre of commercial photography. It showcases clothing & accessories for marketing.
The goal is to motivate or persuade the viewer to purchase the items in the images. Fashion photographers often use models and celebrities to communicate a clear message about the designer and the brand, sparking interest and desire for a product.

Types of
Fashion Photography
There are FOUR major types of fashion photography:
- Catalog fashion photography
- High fashion photography
- Editorial fashion photography
- Street fashion photography
Catalog Fashion Photography
Catalog fashion photography showcases fashion products in places like catalogs, magazine ads, and store websites. The goal is to capture products in an eye-catching way for potential customers to preview the product to get them to purchase the item.
FASHION DESIGN
Catalog fashion photographs are usually:
- Produced in a studio
- Use a model
- Use a neutral background
- No props.
- The focus is on the advertised product!
HIGH Fashion Photography
High fashion photography combines the creative vision of the photographer with a fashion designer or brand. This vision is executed through the use of a specific wardrobe, hairstyle, and makeup. The goal is not just to sell or showcase specific products but also to CREATE a unique piece of art.
HIGH FASHION
This type of photography can be fantastical, excessive, flamboyant, and outrageous. It pushes limits. High-fashion photographs may be exhibited in museums or featured in fashion magazines.
Editorial Fashion Photography
Editorial fashion photography is somewhere between catalog and high fashion photography. Its motive is neither to promote a product nor to showcase out-of-the-box creativity. It seeks to define trends in the industry through a visual story. The photoshoot can be set either indoors or outdoors, depending on the creative vision of the photographer.
Editorial fashion photography involves capturing photographs for the sole purpose of publication in magazines and books. These photographs tell the story of a product or brand, provide a narrative, and illustrate a current trend.
STREET Fashion Photography
Street fashion photography, or street style photography, captures what real people are wearing in the real world. Street fashion photographs are often candid photographs of passersby that highlight certain style statements.
STREET FASHION
Because these are images of people stopped on the street there are NO makeup artists, hairstylists, fashion designers, or brands involved in such shoots. These types of images can be seen on social media and in fashion magazines.

MODEL RELEASE
What is a Model Release?
In business, contracts need to be in writing and mutually agreed upon. All parties involved must agree to and sign this legally binding document. A model release is a legal contract between a photographer and a model (or the parent or guardian of a minor model) that defines how and where the photographs taken may be used by the photographer, the client, and any parties involved in the shoot.
MODEL RELEASE
What is a Model Release?
A model release form is a legal document that safeguards the rights of both the photographer and the model against unauthorized use of artwork.
Contracts can differ by project but should include details about the parties, the produced work, and its usage. If any terms are violated, the model release serves as legal proof.
