World map room
Mappamondo, the most ancient and famous room of the Fermo Civic art gallery is surely the globe room, located in Palazzo dei Priori. Formerly known as Comedies Room, it was built by the wish of Fermo cardinal Decio Azzolino, in order to house the aristocratic Paolo Ruffo’s bequest and it was made by Adamo Sacripante, an architect from Fermo
Lodges
The loggia of St.Rocco was built in 1528 as a vow against the plague by Fermo noble Gian Francesco Rosati in front of the church of St. Rocco, built in 150 today the church has nearly disappeared due to subsequent renovations, while the loggia still has traces of the frescoes that formerly decorated it.
Palace of the Priors
Built at the end of the fourteenth century from the union of two previous buildings from 1396 it was the seat of the Collegio dei Priori. The current facade is due to a rearrangement at the end of the 1500s when the statue of Pope Sixtus V was placed in the center of the double staircase. Today it is the seat of the museum center of the city.
Palace of Studies
The civic library of Fermo is located in Palazzo degli Studi, connected to Palazzo dei Priori through an adorable Renaissance loggia. Palazzo degli Studi was projected by architect Girolamo Rinaldi with a great monumental facade in bricks, today covered by a yellow-ochre plastering that makes the building uniform. On the ground floor the ancient portico was transformed in a series of compartments that houses today the section of the Civic Library dedicated to younger people.
Art Gallery
The Civic Art Gallery Established in 1890 in some rooms of the Civic Library, the Fermo Civic Art Gallery was set up in its current location in 1981. It houses, among other things, an important collections of paintings from Marche and Veneto schools. Among the most significant works are those of Andrea da Bologna, Francescuccio di Cecco Ghissi, Jacobello del Fiore (Stories of St. Lucia ), Vittore Crivelli (Crucifixion), Vincenzo Pagani, Giuliano Presutti and Giovanni Lanfranco (Pentecost).
Ride of the Assumption
The Cavalcata dell’Assunta in Fermo, of which the earliest historic reference dates back to 1182, is an historical re-enactment that takes place in the evening of 14 August and in the afternoon of 15 August in Fermo’s streets. in its more modern and recent edition, it turned forty years in 2021, but it’s still able to thrill Fermo’s citizens and tourists coming in Marche. Ten contrade (city quarters) take part to it and each of them has a Priore (Prior) as leader and it’s characterized by its own colours and by a coat of arms, a shield with the Contrada’s motto and a symbol recalling its history features.
