background

Tuvalu's biggest challenge is the rising sea level surrounding the country's islands. Not only do these rising sea levels promote extremely dangerous storm surges along with erosion and food insecurity, but they most importantly threaten the existence of Tuvalu. Because Tuvalu is situated upon very low-lying islands and coral atolls, any change in the sea level will affect Tuvalu directly. With sea levels rising over the past years as a result of climate change, Tuvalu is only sinking further and furter as time goes on. These conditions call for extreme attention and require immediate efforts or else Tuvalu's inhabitants will no longer be able to call it home.

Climate Change's Effects on Tuvalu

Tuvalu: The Disappearing Nation

Great!

We love data

Tuvalu is a very small island country located in the South-Pacific Ocean known for its bizarre structure and unique shape. Tuvalu is made up of a chain of small oval shaped islands all adding up to only 10 square miles (this is 1/4 the size of Disney World!). With Tuvalu being such a small and vulnerable that is constantly changing physically, its surronding sea levels have been rising drastcally over the past years and are threatening the existence of Tuvalu altogether

What is the story behind Tuvalu?

Important Sources

The impact that climate change has on Tuvalu not only affects nearby regions but it also leaves an impact on the world as a whole. If Tuvalu's conditions were to worsen to the point where evaucation would be necessary, any and all neighboring nations would be impacted as a source of a new home. Along with this, signs of danger on Tuvalu's lands as a result of climate change only symbolize that similar effects are to follow in neighboring island countries. For example, if Tuvalu's waters began to heat up tremendously or acidify, this could only mean that nearby habitats would soon face similar challenges. Looking into a braoder picture, Tuvalu's situation can be looked at in a more global sense. Even if Tuvalu's situation cannot be repliacted in countries all over the world, its reponses to the situation should be noted for future obstacles. Despite Tuvalu being a small, defenseless country, their efforts to combat a larger-than-life challenge should be highlighted and reciprocated in environmental challenge all over the world.

Tuvalu's main focus as a response to climate change revolves around adaptation strategies. In order to withstand the rising sea levels Tuvalu has started to construct seawalls, plant climate-resilient crops, and most importantly, launch its long-term recovery plan, "Te Lafiga O Tuvalu." This recovery plan was made possible from efforts worked out by the Tuvaluan government and the United Nations Development Programme. Within this project, Tuvalu plans on raising lands so that it remains safe for inhabitants and is able to withstand future environmental changes brought by climate change.

Climate change's effects on Tuvalu also show up in many other settings. Climate change has very similar effects specifically in neighboring countries to Tuvalu such as the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Maldives. All of these island countries have very similar characteristics as Tuvalu, them all being water-locked island nations with very low-laying foundations. Efforts to combat climate change remain relatively the same in these countries, as the situation stays very constant throughout them all. Because these countries are so close together their issues regarding climate change are identical; erosion, destruction of crops, or extinction altogether.
