Climate Change

Climate change is the long-term changes to Earth's temperature and weather patterns caused by natural resources and human activities.

Climate change impact

Climate change has affected greenland by harming its environement, wildlife, and its people as well.

The reason Alaska's situation is very similar to Greenland's is because they are both experiencing the melting of icecaps. This has caused a tremendous impact on sea level rise from both countries. The warming of permafrost has led to gases such as methane to be released into the atmosphere further contributing to global warming.

It's no surprise that fossil fuels (greenhouse gases) lead to are atmosphere warming up and therefore causing climate change. In order to avoid the use of fossil fuels, Greenland is investing in more renewable resources such as hydropower. Also, they're practicing more efficient ways to retract minerals and resources from the ground. Global agreements such as the Paris Agreement in which Denmark is a part of (Greenland is owned by Denmark) reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Many people around the world also advocate and campaign for climate change to stop and for people to help its environment rather than harm it which raises awareness of the situation.

Again, the melting of icecaps raise sea levels around the world. Coastal regions such as Miami, and even Venice face challenges such as flooding and storm surges. This has negative impacts and can leas to social and economic challenges. Melting glaciers releases freshwater into a pool of seawater which interferes with ocean current patterns having outcomes such as cold winters in certain areas in Europe and weaker monsoons in Africa and Asia. This affects agriculture which can lead to social, economic, and environmental disasters.

In terms of environment, climate change has led to the melting of icecaps in Greenland. Rising temperature are causing sea-level to rise which has long-term effects. Greenland is warming at a pace 4 times faster than other countries and the release of freshwater into the North Atlantic is interfering with ocean circulation patterns. Its wildlife such as polar bears are at potential risk of losing their habitat seeing as they rely heavily on ice for food. Invading fish populations such as cod are making its way into Greenland's warm waters and disrupting the food web. Native cultures are losing their hunting practices since food resources are becoming scarce. However, the melting of permafrost allows for more buildings and roads to be built.

As mentioned before, the melting of icecaps has led to extreme sea level rise. It's affecting it's neighboring state such as California near its coastal region. Migratory species are affected as well due to the disruption of food webs. The melting of glaciers is causing freshwater to meet seawater, disrupting ocean current patterns which controls weather patterns around the world.
