Native Americanresistance Music

By Ryan Tatara

"For Indigenous people across the globe, the mere fact that they exist today is an act of resistance…"

- Linsday Monture, 2017

What is the purpose?

What is the point of making a song for your cause in the first place?"

Resistance songs have been used to convey many different messages over the years. They can be made to condmen a war, or a government's overreach on a certain group of people, or even to bring attention to a prominent figure who doesn't get the attention that they deserve.

"For me, the power of a protest song is not about getting a hit or making a buck. It has to do with how useful it is to making the world better..." -Buffy Saint-Marie, 2013

+ info

Who's writing it?

There have been many Native American musicians writing resistance music, with their prominence taking off in the early 1960's. Though some of their words were made famous once they were said by other musicians. That is not to say that only Native Americans can make music about their struggles. This presentation is to give light to those authentic sources and what they were so concerned about.

"At one point I kept my music separate from my activism but as I got further into activism, I realized the most powerful thing I could do is just make them the same thing." -Logan Staats, 2022

Write a great headline

When conducting a presentation, there are two objectives to pursue: conveying information and avoiding yawns. To achieve this, it can be beneficial to create an outline and use words and concepts that aid in the assimilation of the content.
