Fashion Trends
The Roaring Twenties
In the 20s, fashion was about getting loose; which applied to morals. Most dresses had a drop waist and they also wore cloche hats.
The Hippie Style
In the 60s, the protest against the Vietnam War (1964) introduced the world to the hippie culture. This fashion trend was characterized by: wearing denim jeans, having long hair, having colourful and psychedelic prints. They propagated the idea of peace and love and advocated simpler and easier lifestyle.
Punk Fashion
This movement spread in the 70s and developed a "do-it-yourself" culture; producing its own music and clothing. The Punk movement was characterized by its rebellious spirit and its disruption with the social conventions. Punk fashion included whatever was deemed ugly and worthless such as: studs and chains; razor blades; bizarre hairstyles (ex: Mohican haircut); dyed hair.
Hip Hop
This movement started at the end of the 70s and became popular in the 1980s. Hip Hop is a culture seen as a way of opposing discrimination in the United States, with references to slavery and prison culture. For example, Hip-Hop fashion was charaterized by baggy trousers and unlaced shoes as an allusion to prison where belt and laces were removed from prisoners in order to prevent inmates hanging themselves . Another trend involves rolling up one leg of one's trousers, as an allusion to slaves who had to leave their chained ankles visible while working.
