VENICE, FLORIDA

Impacts of Climate Change

Over the last few years, my home-town, Venice, Florida has become nearly unlivable due to the incredible storm surge it faces during the increasingly intensifying hurricanes hitting the area. Just last month, the city saw over eight feet of surge which wiped out half the city, as shown in the picture. The increase in hurricane intensity is contributed to directly by climate change, as the warmer conditions in the Gulf of Mexico make it easier for storm cells to form and rapidly expand. I have attatched an article by the Environmental Defense Fund that outlines how climate change has contributed to the increase in Hurricane intensity. https://www.edf.org/climate/how-climate-change-makes-hurricanes-more-destructive

What is being done to remedy the sitaution?

Not a lot has been done so far to combat the rising sea level on the Island of Venice, as well as the devastating storm surge. Little can be done for the surge since Venice is filled with canals that connect to the gulf, and a seawall would not be feasible for the hundreds of small waterways. Bridge reinforcements have been made after residents were unable to leave the island post-hurricane.

Where else is experiencing this?

Coincidentally, a place with a similar topographical makeup and canal based infastructure is Venice, Italy. Venice has been sinking about 1 mm per year, with frequent severe flooding from both storm surge and canal overflow. UNESCO has documented the flooding and destruction Venice, Italy has faced, as well as the plans to help stop the sinking in this article: https://www.npr.org/2023/09/12/1197139620/venice-endangered-climate-change

The catasptrophic flooding in both Venice, Florida and Venice, Italy discussed so far have a deep impact on not only the thousands of people who live in either city, but also on the culutral heritage and unique ecosystems they both have. Venice, Florida is unique tropical canal city, with fresh and salt water esturaties for seabirds and warm water fish. Venice, Italy has a rich culture of archiqtecure and history, and losing either of these places due to climate change would be depriving future generations the ability to experience either of them.
