“Oliver Twist” is a novel of social denunciation published in London in 1837, which analyzes, in particular, the life of poor children in Victorian England.

THE NOVEL

The author is Charles Dickens who, during his childhood was forced to work in a factory and experienced child exploitation and violence in factories.

THE AUTOR

The Victorian age was characterized by great contrasts and social differences. Children did not enjoy any rights and any protection from the Government and often ended up begging in the streets or, worse, became petty criminals.

Oliver was born in a Poorhouse, but his mother dies in childbirth and he goes to live in a horrible orphanage.

CHAPTER 1

Start

There, the children die of hunger. Oliver would like more food for himself and his companions, but he is punished and sent to work by Mrs. Sowerberry, owner of a funeral home.

CHAPTER 2

Start

Oliver is forced to flee to London. He is tired and hungry. Here he meets Jack Dawkins, a young pickpocket who works for the evil Fagin who would induce Oliver to steal for him.

CHAPTER 3

But Oliver is a good boy. Mr. Brownlow, a wealthy and kind-hearted man, welcomes him into his rich home and shows him great affection.

CHAPTER 4

One day, Oliver is kidnapped by Bill Sikes, Fagin’s partner and is forced to take part in a big theft right in Mrs. Brownlow’s house. Things go badly and the boy is arrested.

CHAPTER 5

Nancy is a young and unfortunate girl who lives with Bill. Nancy has a good heart and becomes fond of the boy. She decides to go to the police to tell the whole truth.

CHAPTER 6

Oliver is exonerated, but Nancy is punished for having helped the boy and is killed by Bill. He too, during a daring chase with the police, will die in the alleys of the slums of London.

CHAPTER 7

Start

In the end, Mr. Bronlow decides to adopt Oliver, who thus becomes the heir to all the old gentleman’s fortunes.
