Colombia

Impacts from Climate Change

Flooding and landslides

  • Increased rainfall frequency and intensity due to climate change has caused and increase in landslide risk and flooding
  • The increase in temperature has caused glaciers on top of the andes mountains to melt and increase surface runoff

Impacts from Climate Change

Deforestation

  • While most deforestation is caused by humans to create land for construction, climate change has also affected the amazon rainforrest with defoestation.
  • Climate change has significatly impaced deforestation beacuse of extreame weather such as El Nino. El Nino brings in extreame droughts to the area and with the more frequency that it has become has caused the trees and plants to die on their own.

Imapcts from Climate Change

Sea Level Rise

Another major impact is Sea Level rise. The eown that i am from Barranquilla, The sea level rises 7.02 mm a year, scientists predict that most of the costal cities in colombia will be under water by 2100. The sea level could rise up to 76 cm and the sea level is rising faster than the global average.

Fighting Climate change

Goals for 2050

  • The way Colombia is combating climate change is by setting 3 targets they wat to achieve by 2030 and 2050.
  • Reduce emissions by 51% by 2030
  • Achieveing carbon neutrality by 2050
  • investing $200 Million to end deforestation by 2030

Country with similar Climate change

Most of South and central america

Countries such as Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay have been affected by climate change in a similar way to Colombia, Most countries share the amazon rainforest and the deforestation is impacting all the countries, the changes in rainfall patters have affected agriculture in the countries as well as extreme events such as El Nino. All the countries mentiond are located on the coast which causes them to be impacted by rising sea levels as well.

How does it affect the rest of the world

The continuation of the deforestation is causing more and more carbon diaoxide to be released into the atmosphere. which in turn makes causes the earth temperature to increase in temperature and cusing more El Nino events and droughts. The melting of the glaciers in the Andes mountains is also contributing to sea level rise on a global scale.
