Founded by the Romans, with the name of Camboritum, at the time of the Saxons it was a city of 400 houses called Grantebrycge, and after the Norman conquest a castle was erected there, in 1068. Roger Picot founded the church of St. Giles in 1092 with a chapter of secular canons. In 1224 the Franciscans settled there and a few decades later the Dominicans, Carmelites and Augustinians, and these orders began university teaching there. In 1229 many students from Paris came to Cambridge.
