- Review the archetypes of the Hero’s Journey
- Analyze character development through the lens of the hero archetype
- Analyze textual examples of literary devices
- Analyze media representations of scenes from a text
- Review the events and characters in The Odyssey
Goals
Game Design
- Technical challenges
- Interactivity can become complex
- Escape rooms can take more than a class period if students are not proficient readers; requires backdoors to get to the correct spot the next day.
- Best practice includes some paper elements if the digital environment doesn’t record individual answers (in this case, paid Genially would do so)
Benefits
Potential Challenges
- Group collaboration
- Reflection & connection
- Immediate feedback for student success
Gaming and escape rooms is good for review or to “experience” something already taught. This type of escape room wouldn’t be ideal for introducing concepts, but some escape rooms and games might be designed as exposure and presenting a problem for students to explore.

Are You Worthy?
Meeting the Mentor
As you step outside, an old sage appears and offers you guidance. "To begin your journey, you must solve this riddle: "I am the name a hero chose, To trick a giant, as the story goes. When asked who caused his pain and woe, He cried out loud, but none would know. For 'Nobody' was the name he said, And thus the hero safely fled. What name did the hero give?"

Threshold Guardian
Congrats! The old man reveals himself to be Odysseus, ready to guide you on your quest. With him by your side, you enter a dark forest. Suddenly, you are confronted by a fierce creature blocking your path at the opening of a cave. The creature says, "Be mindful of the company you keep. While he might be the pinnicle of bravery and leadership, his cunning and mercy have gotten his men killed. Reflect on the qualities of a true hero. Is this mentor someone you would follow?"Examine these excerpts from The Odyssey to identify how Odysseus models the characteristics of a hero.

Once you pass the guardian, you enter a cave that echoes with the voices of the past, reciting lines from epics like Homer's The Odyssey. A voice comes through clear than the rest saying, "Adventurous spirits, the path ahead is shrouded in mystery. To unveil it, you must discern the language of epic tales of old. Your perception will illuminate the way forward."You must identify the literary devices embedded in The Odyssey.
