Un carattere le cui modalita sono espresse da numeri è detto quantitativo (o variabile), un carattere le cui modalita NON sono espresse da numeri è detto qualitativo (o mutabile). Le variabili o caratteri quantitativi si classificano ulteriormente a seconda del tipo di valori che possono assumere.
