Long ago, Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a ship called the Mayflower. They were headed to a place called the New World.
When the Pilgrims landed, they saw many trees and wild animals. There were no cities.
The weather was cold. It was Winter. The Pilgrims built one big house called the Common House. People would live here and on the ship. The Winter was hard for the Pilgrims.
In the spring, the Pilgrims built houses from logs.
The Pilgrims met some friendly Wampanoag Native American people.
A Native American named Squanto taught the settlers to plant corn and use fish to fertilize their fields.
The Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag Native Americans to celebrate their harvest with a feast of thankfulness.
Today, people in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November.
In the United States, a turkey is a symbol of Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims and Native Americans probably did NOT eat turkey on the First Thanksgiving.
